  5. HP SNA Distribution Services/iX (HP SNADS/iX), an element of New Wave
  6. Computing, strengthens Hewlett-Packard's transparent multivendor
  7. connectivity commitment.  HP SNADS/iX implements IBM's SNA Distribution
  8. Services (SNA/DS), a strategic component of Systems Application
  9. Architecture (SAA).

  13. HP SNADS/iX provides electronic mail exchange between HP DeskManager and
  14. IBM's OfficeVision/400 product (when connected to IBM AS/400) or between
  15. HP DeskManager and IBM's OfficeVision/MVS, or DISOSS products (when
  16. connected to an IBM mainframe).  It enables both HP DeskManager users
  17. and users of IBM's OfficeVision/400, OfficeVision/MVS, or DISOSS
  18. products to send and receive messages, PC files, and DCA documents to
  19. one another with no knowledge of user locations or addresses.  Messages
  20. can also be exchanged with users of other vendor electronic mail systems
  21. that also implement SNA/DS and are connected to the AS/400 or IBM host.
  22.   HP SNADS/iX provides a migration path to MPE iX for current
  23. HP OfficeConnect to DISOSS/V customers and offers improved performance
  24. and simplified configuration and administration.
  25.  
  26. Features and Benefits
  27. With HP SNADS/iX, company communications are integrated, network
  28. reliability is increased, and administrative support and network costs
  29. are reduced with the following features:
  30. o Transparent Access: HP DeskManager users send and receive electronic
  31.   mail to and from IBM users.  Mixed distribution lists of SNA/DS users
  32.   and HP DeskManager users can be created without knowledge of user
  33.   locations or address formats.
  34. o End-to-End Acknowledgments: HP or IBM users can send messages
  35.   requesting acknowledgment, ensuring that recipients have received
  36.   messages.
  37. o Flexible Document Conversion: Messages from HP DeskManager to IBM can
  38.   be configured to be converted to IBM DCA Revisable Form Text (RFT),
  39.   Final Form Text (FFT), or Notes prior to transmission to the IBM host.
  40.   In the reverse process, DCA documents transmitted to HP will not be
  41.   automatically converted.  HP DeskManager users read nonconverted
  42.   documents, then invoke a converter prior to editing.  The
  43.   HP Convert/DCA product is used to provide this user-transparent
  44.   function.  HP DeskManager PLUS contains this product to do the
  45.   conversion.  High performance is maintained on the HP SNADS/iX node by
  46.   distributing the conversion function to the end-user node.
  47. o PC File Transfers: Binary data, such as PC files, can be sent and
  48.   received.  An HP DeskManager user may attach an unlimited number of PC
  49.   files in a message.  No conversion is performed.
  50. o Simplified Configuration: All configuration is performed with existing
  51.   configuration tools; MAILCONFIG for HP DeskManager related
  52.   configuration and NMMGR for SNADS/iX configuration.  HP DeskManager
  53.   and IBM users are configured using the HP DeskManager configurator.
  54.   No individual user mailboxes need to be configured on the IBM host for
  55.   HP DeskManager users.
  56. o Partial Operation: HP SNADS/iX continues to operate if one of its
  57.   components is inactive.  For example, if the SNA connection is
  58.   unavailable, HP SNADS/iX continues to process outgoing HP Desk
  59.   messages.  If HP DeskManager is temporarily unavailable, HP SNADS/iX
  60.   continues to receive incoming messages from the SNA network.
  61. o Administrative and Diagnostic Tools: HP SNADS/iX provides a complete
  62.   tool set including dynamic reconfiguration, configuration validation,
  63.   and error recovery.
  64. o Easy Migration: Migration from HP OfficeConnect to DISOSS to
  65.   HP SNADS/iX is simplified with a table conversion utility.  The
  66.   customer can use this tool at the time of installation to convert user
  67.   addresses in the HP OfficeConnect to DISOSS Address Conversion Table
  68.   (ACT) to address entries in a format acceptable to HP DeskManager.
  69.   The customer is relieved of the task of reconstructing the table and
  70.   only has to perform minor edits.
  71.  
  72. Functional Description
  73. Messages are transmitted between the HP 3000 Series 900 system and an
  74. IBM AS/400 or an IBM System 370/MVS mainframe using LU 6.2 protocols.
  75. Message delivery is asynchronous to the user; the sender and receiver do
  76. not establish an end-to-end session.  HP SNADS/iX is a bundled product
  77. that includes the APPC subsystem component.  HP LU 6.2 API/iX
  78. (P/N 30294A) can be purchased separately for other application use.
  79.   HP SNADS/iX is required on only one MPE iX system in an HP DeskManager
  80. network.  The HP DeskManager subnetwork may be comprised of either MPE/V
  81. or MPE iX systems or a combination of both.  Every system with
  82. HP DeskManager users who communicate with IBM users needs to run
  83. HP Convert/DCA for document conversion services.  HP DeskManager users
  84. may be local on the HP SNADS/iX node.
  85.   HP Convert/DCA is bundled with HP DeskManager PLUS B.05 and later
  86. releases.
  87.   HP SNADS/iX can share an SNA Link with other HP SNA services including
  88. SNA NRJE/iX, SNA IMF/iX, SNA DHCF/iX, and LU 6.2 API/iX.  Either of the
  89. SNA Link types can be used when connecting to an IBM mainframe: SNA/SDLC
  90. Link/iX or SNA/X.25 Link/iX.  SNA/SDLC Link/iX must be used when
  91. connecting to an IBM AS/400.  SNA/X.25 Link/iX, to connect to an IBM
  92. AS/400, is not supported.
  93.   NLS 16-bit character mapping; interactive and programmatic access; and
  94. data integrity are not supported for languages such as Japanese, Korean,
  95. Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.

  97. Interoperability
  98. HP SNADS/iX has been verified to interoperate with other electronic mail
  99. systems which also connect to an IBM AS/400 or IBM DISOSS host.  The
  100. following products have been tested:
  101.   - IBM OV/MVS
  102.   - IBM PS/CICS
  103.   - IBM OV/400
  104.   - IBM PROFS*
  105.   - IBM OfficeVision/VM*
  106.   - DEC ALL in One and MessageRouter/SNADS*
  107.   - Wang OIS-VS and Wang OFFICE/DISOSS Gateway*
  108.   - VAX/VMS mail
  109.   - Higgins mail
  110.   - cc: mail
  111.   - HP DeskManager and HP OfficeConnect to DISOSS*
  112. * Connections are via an IBM DISOSS host.  Other interoperability
  113.   testing continues, and this list will be updated.  Please check with
  114.   your Hewlett-Packard Sales Representative.

  116. Product Requirements
  117. o An HP 3000 Series 900 running MPE XL Release 2.2 or MPE iX Release 4.0
  118.   or later operating system.  For IBM AS/400 connectivity, MPE iX
  119.   Release 4.0 or later is required.
  120. o Either SNA/SDLC Link/iX (P/N 30291A) for IBM AS/400 or IBM mainframe
  121.   connectivity
  122. - or -
  123.   SNA/X.25 Link/iX (P/N 30298A) for IBM mainframe connectivity.
  124. o HP DeskManager PLUS B.05 or later (P/N 36567A).  This product includes
  125.   HP Convert/DCA (for document conversion services)
  126. - or -
  127.   HP DeskManager B.05 or later (P/N 36570A) for customers who have
  128.   already purchased the HP Convert/DCA product.  (HP Convert/DCA is no
  129.   longer available as a separate product.)

  131. HP 3000 Disk Space requirements:
  132. Installation: 300,000 free sectors
  133. Product Installed Size: 45,000 sectors
  134. Free Space needed to run: 65,000 sectors plus space for message storage
  135. User Acknowledgement Table (UAT) Size: 256 bytes/DISOSS recipient

  137. If connecting to IBM Mainframe
  138. o An IBM System/370 or compatible mainframe with an IBM 37xx
  139.   communications controller.  HP SNADS/iX has been certified with the
  140.   following minimum levels of IBM software for the IBM mainframe and
  141.   communications controller:
  142.   - MVS Version 3.1
  143.   - ACF/NCP Release 5.2.1 or later
  144.   - ACF VTAM Release 3.2 or later
  145. o CICS Release 1.7 PUT 8903 or later
  146. o DISOSS Release 3.4 PUT 8901 or later
  147.  
  148. If connecting to IBM AS/400
  149. o An IBM AS/400.
  150.   - OS/400 Version 1.2 or later
  151.   - OfficeVision/400 Version 1.2 or later (OfficeVision/400 version 1.x
  152.     previously called AS/400 Office 1.x)
  153.   
  154. Installation and Configuration Policy
  155. The customer is responsible for loading the HP SNADS/iX software onto
  156. the system.
  157.   Hewlett-Packard will perform minimum configuration of HP SNADS/iX to
  158. verify minimum product functionality.  These activities are included in
  159. the product purchase price.
  160. Customer Responsibility
  161. Prior to having HP personnel on site to perform minimum configuration of
  162. HP SNADS/iX, the customer is responsible for the following:
  163. o Providing HP with the information necessary to complete the Network
  164.   Implementation and Support Plan (NISP), including:
  165.   - System configurations
  166.   - Logical network map identifying relevant traffic flow
  167.   - Physical network map identifying relevant network hardware
  168.     components
  169. o Verifying that the necessary host mainframe software is installed and
  170.   configured to support HP SNADS/iX.  The customer should contact their
  171.   HP Sales Representative for typical host parameter values or consult
  172.   the +HP SNA Products: ACF/VTAM and ACF/NCP Guide+ (5958-8543) for
  173.   details.
  174. o Verifying that the SNA Link (SNA/SDLC Link/iX or SNA/X.25 Link/iX) is
  175.   properly installed and configured prior to the installation of
  176.   HP SNADS/iX.
  177. o Verifying that HP DeskManager is installed and configured.
  178. o Verifying that HP SNADS/iX gateway is configured in HP DeskManager.
  179. o Updating the HP 3000 system to the proper release level and installing
  180.   the HP SNADS/iX software using AUTOINST.  Refer to the HP 3000
  181.   Installation and Update Manual (P/N 36123-90001).
  182. o Verifying that all of the necessary software modules have been
  183.   successfully installed by AUTOINST and are at the correct version
  184.   levels, using the NMMAINT.PUB.SYS utility.
  185. o Performing full system backups as necessary and ensuring that the
  186.   HP 3000 system and personnel with HP 3000 system management knowledge
  187.   are available when HP is onsite to complete the minimum configuration
  188.   of HP SNADS/iX.
  189. The customer is also responsible for completing the configuration in
  190. order to fully integrate HP SNADS/iX into the existing customer network
  191. after HP has completed the minimum configuration of HP SNADS/iX.
  192.  
  193. HP Responsibility
  194. Following the installation of HP SNADS/iX, HP is responsible for the
  195. following:
  196. o Confirming that all of the necessary software modules have been
  197.   installed and are at the correct version level.
  198. o Configuring the APPC/iX subsystem with two APPC sessions.
  199. o Configuring the HP SNADS/iX product to a minimum configuration
  200.   necessary to verify software functionality.  This includes configuring
  201.   one cluster and one mapper in SNADS.
  202. o Verifying the HP SNADS/iX configuration by issuing the VERIFY command
  203.   in the HP SNADS/iX Manager Program and ensuring that the test
  204.   completes successfully.  Further verification may be performed by
  205.   sending one message from HP DeskManager to OfficeVision/400,
  206.   OfficeVision/MVS, or DISOSS and another from OfficeVision/400,
  207.   OfficeVision/MVS, or DISOSS to HP DeskManager.
  208. These steps complete HP's portion of the installation and minimum
  209. configuration of HP SNADS/iX.
  210.  
  211. Additional Implementation Assistance
  212. For implementation needs that go beyond installation, the customer can
  213. either provide self-support or can purchase additional services from HP.
  214. These services include Network Startup and HP ConsultLine.  In addition,
  215. the customer can also purchase services from HP on a time-and-materials
  216. basis.
  217.   Network Startup includes implementation scheduling and coordination
  218. assistance, network configuration and verification testing, and network
  219. documentation.
